The Executive Director: Human Resources (HR) at the University of Cape Town (UCT) is a senior position that reports to the Deputy Vice Chancellor. S/he is responsible for the leadership and management of the institution’s HR function and will contribute to UCT’s mission as a member of the executive team, influencing and advising senior management to adopt and apply best practices.

As a member of the university’s leadership team, the Executive Director: Human Resources will provide strategic direction to the institution for its Human Resources requirements through the development and implementation of an institution-wide human capital management strategy.

Experience and Qualifications

Given the complexity of the UCT environment, we require the Executive Director: HR, to:

• be an experienced HR professional with strong leadership and management skills suitable to a transforming environment;
• have a relevant tertiary degree, preferably at Master’s level, at least 5 years’ relevant experience in Human Resources as well as appropriate senior management experience in a large organisation.
• be thoroughly familiar with the fundamentals of the whole range of HR functions including recruitment and selection, employment equity, human resource development, performance management, organisational design, employee relations, bargaining and negotiations and industrial relations, people planning, remuneration and benefits and human resource administration. ;
• be able to participate and thrive in a leadership environment which can present multiple demands at any time. S/he needs to be a strong communicator and influencer at an individual and collective level.

Knowledge of a university environment and the challenges of leading an HR function in an academic enterprise will be a strong recommendation.

The annual remuneration package, including benefits will be at an executive level and is negotiable. Appointment to this position is on the basis of a five-year contract which is subject to an annual performance review against agreed objectives. The contract is renewable subject to a prescribed extensive performance review.
